I am a U.S. citizen. My stepson, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, has just completed high school with a 3.0 average. He wants to attend college, but without proper identification that isn't likely. Most schools won't accept a student without a valid Social Security number (SSN). Those that do accept undocumented immigrants do so a t a primium of upt o three times the cost of a resident citizen. What do you tell a high school graduate? Do you tell him that he has no future in this country because, though he was raised and educated here, he wasn't born here? Do you tell him to go away because you think he's the cause of all of the problems in our country? Do you tell him to leave because you think life would be easier without him? Do you tell him to leave because he's not wanted here becasue he speaks more than one language? What do you tell a child that has no future in America?
My wife, also an illegal immigrant, has paid taxes each year using her tax id. Before we were married I believed that immigrants, regardless of how they arrived in this country, got a "free ride" with all types of government aid. I now know this isn't true.
Of the 12 million "undocumented" immigrants in our country the vast majority of are documented with the I.R.S. and pay taxes like other U.S. citizens (they view it as the cost of being in this country). They do so without political representation because they are only acknowledged by two of the three branches of government, the Executive and Judical branches. Though they are recognized by the I.R.S. and Supreme Court they are not represented by the Legislative branch, The Senate and the House of Representatives. How can we tax people, impose our laws upon them, but not grant them any of the "inalienable human rights'? Are they not human? Is that why they are called illegal, because they don't have a legal right to exist?
