- President James Madison
The tragic shooting at Virginia Tech last month has touched us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. The shooting has forced Americans to ask difficult questions about the safety of our children, our gun laws, the state of our mental health system and, yes, our immigration policy. The shooter Cho Seung-Hui was a legal immigrant from South Korea, living in the United States since he was eight-years-old. Most have concluded that Cho had long history of mental illness. Others (see article), unfortunately, have decided to use the shooting for political gain, blaming the shooting on immigration. We must put an end to this kind of rhetoric which only begets more anger and more violence.

This guys is a major nerrow minded IDIOT, he thinks that getting rid of Immigrants in the US will get rid of violence, what a morron
This is exactly why we don’t need more immigrants unwilling or unable to learn English. Just look at the horrible spelling and grammar in the comment above mine, not to mention the complete lack of intelligent thought.
Braden, this country was built by immigrants. Why do you hate America so much?
Buchanon is a name that originates in Scotland. Patrick is the descendant of immigrants just like everyone else. Even Native Americans made the trek over the Bering Strait. His rhetoric, much like Rosie O’Donnells’ is so virulent and disconnected from reality as to be functionally useless except in rounding up mobs with pitchforks to storm the Frankenstein Castle.
He uses vague language to make ad hominem attacks on others for his own ends—‘some aliens never assimilate’ means nothing. All’s you need to do is find TWO people in the entire US who have never assimilated, and you have a true statement that is meaningless. I can find you hundreds of immigrants who have never assimilated, but millions did.
...and what of not assimilating? Is it a crime as long as the laws of the land are not broken? The only thing it is is a self-imposed imprisonment. I feel pity for people who have come to the US and haven’t assimilated, but I do not feel they are any more dangerous that anyone else. In fact, Buchanon is more dangerous, because he *is* obviously unbalanced. Should put him in a cage with Rosie, give them both clubs, and let nature take its course. I’m betting $50 that Rosie cleans his clock.
I thought his essay was more than a little disorganized, and apparently, he even forgot his initial diatribe (gun control). I can only picture his desired view of the Hokie Nation—students armed to the teeth. Yeah. That’ll happen.
It’s sad to say that some people use conservatism (or liberalism for that matter) as a mask for bigotry and greed. Some conservative goals are worthy indeed, but when conservatives find themselves keeping company with fearmongers and media trolls, the message is lost.
The day of the ‘shock jocks’ is fast coming to a much deserved close. Hopefully, the age of the ‘pinheaded pundits’ will follow right on its heels.
Don’t take this troll too serious—laughter will make him go away.
It is the narrow mindedness of individuals, such as Mr. Buchanan that is keeping us [USA] from reaching an agreement on immigration reform. Violence in this country is NOT from the immigrants. In my area of the country, the violence and crime is caused by locals born and raised; very rarely do you hear of an immigrant committing a crime. If I may, Mr. Buchanan history shows MANY MORE AMERICANS GOING BERSERK on our soil than immigrants.
To name a few “crimes” such as school shootings, murders, assassins & assassin attempts that were committed by Americans see below: (If in error, I listed someone as American that was not, please correct me.)
A list of a few school shootings by Americans
University of Texas at Austin massacre - Austin, Texas, United States; August 1, 1966 – Perpetrator: Charles Whitman
Brenda Ann Spencer, Cleveland Elementary School - January 29, 1979 (Because she didn’t like Mondays)
Pearl High School shooting, Pearl, Mississippi, United States; October 1, 1997 Perpetrator: Luke Woodham (also murdered his mother)
Jonesboro massacre - Jonesboro, Arkansas, United States; March 24, 1998 Perpetrators: Andrew Golden & Mitchell Johnson
Columbine High School massacre - Littleton, Colorado, United States; April 20, 1999 Perpetrators: Eric Harris & Dylan Klebold

Charles Whitman (University of Texas Shootings, Austin, Texas, August 1, 1966)
Richard Speck (murdered eight student nurses, Chicago, 1966)
James Oliver Huberty (McDonald’s massacre, San Ysidro, California, 18 July 1984)

Assassinations or Assassination Attempts
Lee Harvey Oswald assassinated President John F. Kennedy November 22, 1963
Reagan, Ronald (president of U.S.): Shot in left lung in Washington by John W. Hinckley, Jr., on March 30, 1981; three others also wounded.
Ford, Gerald R. (president of U.S.): Escaped assassination attempt Sept. 5, 1975, in Sacramento, Calif., by Lynette Alice (Squeaky) Fromme. He also escaped an assassination attempt in San Francisco, Calif., Sept. 22, 1975, by Sara Jane Moore.
King, Martin Luther, Jr. (civil rights leader): Shot April 4, 1968, in Memphis by James Earl Ray; died same day
Domestic Terrorist
Timothy James McVeigh (the Oklahoma City Bomber) April 19, 1995 – and he was an Army veteran
Yes, Mr. Buchanan, Lee Boyd Malvo was an immigrant from Jamaica. However he was under the influences of John Allen Muhammad, born in New Orleans. I am not in anyway condoning what Mr. Malvo did, for it was deplorable. I am just stating he was not alone in the sniper attacks, he was with an American.
Excuse me Mr. Buchanan not to sound rude, but before the 1970’s and in the 70’s… children could go to the hospital visibly abused and no questions asked sent back home. “Back then” people were raised to be quiet-not the out spoken generations since. So, I really do not see teachers, students or anyone trying in anyway to intervene with Cho. The horrific incident that took place at VA Tech wasn’t due to Cho being an immigrant it has a lot to do with gun laws and mental health.
Everyone has a right to their own opinion, I know. However, I am amazed at how prejudice and narrow-minded you and others are. It is 2007, people need to wake up and open up their minds and hearts.
So tell me again… Immigrants are the cause of the crimes in the USA… I THINK NOT!
I will tell you why the crime is escalating in the USA; it is due to the government taking God out of our schools as well as corporal punishment out of schools. If we [USA] continue to remove God from our lives and country, God will remove himself from us. We are quickly loosing favor with God, at the fault of our country’s leaders. Remember we are “…one nation under God.” Think about it immigrants helped build our country… and remember (trace your family trees) we all come from immigrants somewhere along the way.
And by the way what is wrong with being polyglot? I would love to be multilingual-able to speak or write several languages. The Bible is polyglot; contains, is composed of and/or written in several languages. Polyglot doesn’t seem so bad to me. But that is just my opinion.
In regards to Braden’s remark, I know some Americans (born and raised) that cannot read or write English. I know even more that speak with such poor grammar-it is a wonder I understand them at all.
First of all i would like to comment on the “assimilate” part of this article. The article speaks or even blames a reform which occured back in 1965 in relation to the shooter at VA Tech. By no means am i defend the shooter for his act of violence. No doubt the shooter was cruel to injure and kill innocent people, but to blame a group of people for one person’s wrong doing is simply injustice. From what i have seen and read from news and articles, it appears that the shooter at VA Tech was an English major that spoke fluent English, and most likely is “assimilated” into our culture. It just seems a bit strange to me when a white guy kills a group of people hes considered crazy and psycho path, but when an Asian person kills a group of peple hes considered crazy and psycho path , unassimilate, and “would never happened if we didn’t let him and his people into our country at the first place.” Well if we want to put matter that way, then we would have to go back to history and speak about the Native Americans too...but then again, that’s another chapter to write about. Blaming diversity is like blaming the color of trees. Diversity is here to stay...our planet is flled with different races and culture...its here to stay like the green on your grass (except winter time when they turn brown...but that’s staying too). To be honest, how assimilated do you expect people to be until you realize that “assimilate” is just an idea to acheive. It is often mislead or even misunderstood when people say “so and so is not assimilate to our culture and they never will” without getting to know them. Maybe they ARE “assimilated” to our culture but you choose not to get to know them and continue to blame them for not wanting to “assimilate” to our culture...when in fact, they very well aware of our culture but just want to reserve theirs. Lets be honest...no one wants to be forced...i mean slavery ended 100 years ago...lets not start another one. So to speak...just my two cents!
