America was indebted to immigration for her settlement and prosperity. That part of America which had encouraged them most had advanced most rapidly in population, agriculture and the arts.

The tragic shooting at Virginia Tech last month has touched us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected. The shooting has forced Americans to ask difficult questions about the safety of our children, our gun laws, the state of our mental health system and, yes, our immigration policy. The shooter Cho Seung-Hui was a legal immigrant from South Korea, living in the United States since he was eight-years-old. Most have concluded that Cho had long history of mental illness. Others (see article), unfortunately, have decided to use the shooting for political gain, blaming the shooting on immigration. We must put an end to this kind of rhetoric which only begets more anger and more violence.

Uniting Families

From US Citizen children separated from non-citizen parents (see: LA TIMES ARTICLE) to battered women seeking to be united with their children (see: New York Times Article) to those stories found on our website , our current immigration system is separating families.

These people simply want a better life, a life free of persecution and rich with opportunity.  There is nothing more human than wanting whats best for your family.

A Terrifying Blame Game

Read this article - http://www.sltrib.com/ci_5756635

Utah District 65 Chairman Don Larsen has introduced a resolution saying that illegal immigration is the devil's plan to destroy the nation by "stealth invasion." The resolution states that:

In order for Satan to establish his 'New World Order' and destroy the freedom of all people as predicted in the Scriptures, he must first destroy the U.S. The mostly quiet and unspectacular invasion of illegal immigrants does not focus the attention of the nations the way open warfare does, but is all the more insidious for its stealth and innocuousness.

Utah's Republican Party has already spoken out against Chairman Larson's position and the resolution is gaining no traction.  Rolando Murillo said it best, "we're grateful that the vast majority of people do not embrace these ideas."

While Chairman Larsen's rhetoric is beyond belief, it is vital that we all do our part to end misinformation.  Immigrants of all backgrounds have built America into all that it is today.  Click Here write A letter to your local newspaper explaining why we all must support immigration reform.

Equal Rights to Attend College

Read this LA Times Article: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-assist17apr17,1,7880450.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

The anti-immigrant group the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) attacks legislation like the DREAM Act that would give equal rights to in-state tuition and provide a pathway to citizenship for students for young adults who were brought here illegally as children.

Anti-immigrant groups contend that these young adults, many of whom have lived in their home state for 10+ years should not have access to the in-state tuition they have earned.

These young adults came to the United States as small children, America is their home.  They want to attend college or join the military so they can become the next generation of leaders.  As a country we should do everything in our power to encourage such behavior.

When FAIR argues that "there are only a finite number of seats available," they are ignoring the fact that our university system is constantly growing and that community colleges often have very open admissions policies.

These young adults have earned the right to go to college through their hard work and dedication to their studies.  They are paying into the system just as much as their peers - When they go out to dinner with their friends or buy tickets to a concert, they are paying taxes.

If these young adults have equal access to an education and to the armed forces, they will have the tools necessary to contribute to society for many years to come. They are not asking for special treatment or some quota of seats, they are asking to be treated like every other kid who grows up in America.  They are asking to be treated FAIRLY.

Paying Taxes

We updated the top story today because there is a myth out there that needs to be ended (view story), immigrants both legal and illegal pay taxes.  Anti-immigrant groups always make a point of saying that immigrants cost tax payers money, but what their rhetoric neglects to mention is that these immigrants are paying into the system; they are contributing to building a strong and vibrant economy.

What we're seeing this year is a rise in filings.  Much of this is due to the prospects of comprehensive immigration reform passing.  Their motivation for paying taxes is an appreciation for America, a desire to work within the system, become citizens, and assimilate into American society.  Together, we can make it clear to Congress that immigrants are not here to take our jobs; they are here to be a part of the American Dream - SPEAK OUT: Tell Your representatives in Washington why we need reform.
